What if the biggest distractions in your spiritual life aren’t the obvious ones?

In a world of likes, shares, and follows, it’s easy to measure our worth by how much attention we get. We live in a performance-driven culture, where being noticed feels like being valued.

But here’s the problem: When we spend our lives chasing human approval, we can completely miss out on God’s best for us.

Jesus warned about this in Matthew 6. He exposed a dangerous trap—one that’s just as real today as it was 2,000 years ago.

And if we don’t recognize it, we’ll find ourselves doing the right things for the wrong reasons.

📖 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.” — Matthew 6:1

So let’s talk about it.

Here are 3 hidden traps that can secretly pull you away from God—even when you’re doing good things.

Trap #1: The Performance Mindset—Living for the Applause

📖 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.” – Matthew 6:1

In Jesus’ day, religious leaders would publicly announce their generosity, make sure people saw them praying, and do everything for show. Jesus called them hypocrites—not because they were doing bad things, but because they were doing good things with the wrong motives.

The Greek word for “to be seen” in Matthew 6:1 is θεαθῆναι (theathēnai)—it’s where we get the word theater. It literally means “to put on a show.”

📌 Jesus is saying, “Faith isn’t theater.” If you’re doing good things just to be noticed, you’re not doing them for God. You’re doing them for an audience.

How to Break Free from This Trap That Pulls You Away from God

  • Ask yourself: Would I still do this if no one ever knew?
  • Refocus your why: Who is your real audience—people or God?
  • Serve in secret: Find ways to give, pray, and serve where no one will ever see.

Jesus flips the script:
📌 Don’t just do good things. Do them for the right reason.

Trap #2: Measuring Your Worth by Human Recognition

📖 “…Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” – Matthew 6:2

Ever done something kind, but felt frustrated when no one noticed? Maybe you volunteered, served at church, or went out of your way to help someone—and no one said thank you.

It’s a painful feeling. But here’s what Jesus is saying:

📌 If your only goal is human recognition, then human recognition is all you’ll get.

Jesus contrasts this with how God sees us. In Matthew 6:4, He says:

📖 “Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

The Greek word for “sees” here is βλέπων (blepōn)—and it’s powerful. Unlike theathēnai (theater, putting on a show), blepōn means “to see deeply, to perceive, to understand beyond the surface.”

📌 God doesn’t just see what you do. He sees why you do it.

Human praise is temporary. But when you live for God’s eyes only, there’s a deeper, lasting reward.

How to Break Free from This Trap That Pulls You Away from God

  • Shift your focus from “Who noticed?” to “Did I honor God?”
  • Remember that God rewards what people overlook.
  • Find peace in knowing that even unseen faithfulness is seen by God.

Trap #3: Forgetting That Your Heart is the Real Battle

📖 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21

At the core of everything, Jesus is asking: Where is your heart?

This is personal for me.

When I first wrote this message for a sermon, I caught myself wondering: Will people like this? Will they think it’s a good message?

Even when writing blog posts, it’s easy to focus on people as my “why”—wondering how many will read it, share it, or comment on it. And when I noticed that creeping into my heart, I had to stop.

Because the real question isn’t “Did people approve?”
The real question is “Did I do this for God?”

📌 Jesus doesn’t just want your actions. He wants your heart.

How to Break Free from This Trap That Pulls You Away from God

  • Ask: Am I doing this for God’s approval or people’s?
  • Check your motives in prayer. Before any action, pause and ask, “Lord, is this for You?”
  • Remember what really lasts. Human approval fades. God’s reward is eternal.

Final Thought: Do You Want to Be Seen or Known?

At the end of the day, we all crave recognition. But Jesus is inviting us into something greater.

📌 Do you want to be seen by people? Or truly known by God?

Because what you do matters. But who you do it for matters even more.

So, let me challenge you today with one simple question:

👉 Would I still do this if no one ever knew?

Would you still serve, give, pray, or do what’s right—if there was no credit, no applause, no recognition?

Because the only eyes that truly matter are the eyes of the One who sees what is done in secret.

📖 “Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:4
